Butler County, Kentucky

 

Butler County, Kentucky is located in the Western Coal Field region of the state.  It lies just north of Warren County and on both sides of Green River.  The Green River was the natural avenue of access into western Kentucky, and until the third decade of the 20th century it was the principle avenue of commerce for that area.

 

Richard C. Dellium and James Forgy were the first to settle in the area, near Berry's Lick in 1786.  Salt was produced at Berry's Lick using horses to draw water from wells, some of which were over three hundred feet deep.  

 

The county

 

In 2000 the Butler County population was 13,010.  The county seat is Morgantown.
