New Kent County, Virginia

 

 

New Kent County, Virginia was settled in 1644 formed a decade later in 1654  and named either for the English county of Kent or for Kent Island, in the upper waters of the Chesapeake Bay. New Kent became the county seat in 1691.

 

The county was Hanover County, Virginia was formed from a part of New Kent County.

 

 

St. Peters Parrish Church was built in 1701.  George and Martha Washington frequently attended services there and were married there.
