Spotsylvania County, Virginia



Spotsylvania County is in the Tidewaters area of eastern Virginia, midway between Washington, D.C. and Richmond, Virginia.  


It was established in 1721 from Essex, King, Queen and King William counties. The county was named for Virginia Lieutenant Governor Alexander Spotswood. Many Civil War battles were fought in the county, including the battles of Chancellorsville, the Wilderness, Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania Court House.


 The county has a total area of 412 miles.  The United States census estimates it's population to be approximately 110,000 people as of 2004.
